Frequently asked
questions

The questions that come up most often from people looking into Jiu Jitsu at Maximillian. If yours is not here, just ask.

What does a normal BJJ class look like?
A standard class has three parts: warm up, techniques and sparring. Warm ups often include technical skills and are mainly there for injury prevention. Techniques are the heart of the lesson, where you learn and practise the art. Sparring is where you apply what you have learnt against a resisting partner.
What should I bring to a trial class?
Very little. Come in comfortable exercise clothes with no buttons or zips, and please leave jewellery off for the session. Flip flops and a water bottle are useful. Arrive five to ten minutes before the class starts.
Do I need to get fit before I join?
A resounding no. Jiu Jitsu has its own kind of fitness that you build over time simply by training. Even if you are fit in other sports you will still need to get Jiu Jitsu fit. Take your time and go at your own pace.
I am afraid of getting hurt. Is it dangerous?
Almost all sport carries some risk. Surprisingly, Jiu Jitsu carries less risk than many common activities such as rugby. A big reason is tapping, the fail safe that lets students train safely. Combined with a healthy academy culture and responsible training practices, it can be trained safely long term.
How do memberships work?
All memberships run month to month, so there is no six or twelve month commitment. If you want to cancel, we ask for one full calendar month of notice. Students also need to have or arrange their own gi at sign up.
Do you offer once a week training packages?
No. Jiu Jitsu has a steep learning curve, and at once a week the curve becomes too slow for most people to enjoy themselves and progress. We would rather you got real value from it.
Do you offer no-gi only memberships?
Not at present. A gi is required for our grading structure, and those gradings are an important part of the journey. We do not want any member to miss out on that.
How do gradings work?
Our gradings do not follow a strict assessment format like some classical martial arts. Grades are decided before each event based on a set of criteria, which lets the ceremony itself be a celebration. Adult gradings happen twice a year, kids gradings at the end of each school term.
If I join, do I have to compete?
Not at all. Competing is entirely optional. We do encourage anyone who is interested and provide the platform and preparation to help them get ready for events.
